About Teaching American History (TAH)

Now in its second year, the Humboldt County Teaching American History Program (HCTAHP), a Teaching American History Grant funded program, is collaboration between the Northern Humboldt Union High School District and Humboldt State University (HSU).  The HCTAHP is comprised of a core group of 43 5th grade, 8th grade and high school teachers of America History.  This cohort, drawn from 17 local school districts, is now in its second year of graduate level instruction.  Over the course of the grant, HSU history faculty will provide 270 hours of instruction.  Additionally, all participants are required to develop units of study based upon the content we are studying that semester.  Those teachers who desire can participate in further six units of instruction and upon successful completion of a project and other assignments will receive a masters Degree in Social Science with an emphasis in American History.  Over the course of the grant, Humboldt County Teaching American History Program participants will read, study and discuss over 30 historically significant texts including, works such as Margaret Thatcher Ulrich’s Midwives Tale.  Joseph Ellis’ Founding Brothers and David McCullough’s Truman.  Participants are also encouraged to attend and present at local, regional and national history and social science conferences.
